چکیده

Tail-biting trellises of linear and nonlinear block codes are addressed. We refine the information-theoretic approach of a previous work on conventional trellis representation, and show that the same ideas carry over to tail-biting trellises. We present lower bounds on the state and branch complexity profiles of these representations. These bounds are expressed in terms of mutual information between different portions of the code, and they introduce the notions of superstates and superbranches. For linear block codes, our bounds imply that the total number of superstates, and respectively superbranches, of a tail-biting trellis of the code cannot be smaller than the total number of states, and respectively branches, of the corresponding minimal conventional trellis, though the total number of states and branches of a tail-biting trellis is usually smaller than that of the conventional trellis. We also develop some improved lower bounds on the state complexity of a tail-biting trellis for two classes of codes: the first-order Reed-Muller codes and cyclic codes. We show that the superstates and superbranches determine the Viterbi decoding complexity of a tail-biting trellis. Thus, the computational complexity of the maximum-likelihood decoding of linear block codes on a tail-biting trellis, using the Viterbi algorithm, is not smaller than that of the conventional trellis of the code. However, tail-biting trellises are beneficial for suboptimal and iterative decoding techniques. key words: trellises, tail-biting trellis, mutual information, maximum-likelihood decoding, Viterbi algorithm

Tail-biting Trellises for Linear Codes and their Duals

Trellis representations of linear block codes are attractive because of their use in soft decision decoding algorithms. An interesting property that is known for conventional trellises is that the minimal conventional trellis (known to be unique) for a linear block code, and its dual have the same state-complexity profile. This interesting property follows from the BCJR construction [1] of the ...

A novel trellis design technique for both block and convolutional codes based on the Shannon product of component block codes is introduced. Using the proposed technique, structured trellises for block and convolutional codes have been designed. It is shown that the designed trellises are minimal and allow reduced complexity Viterbi decoding. Zndex Terms-Linear codes, trellis structure, product...

A low-complexity maximum likelihood decoder for tail-biting trellis

Tail-biting trellises are defined on a circular time axis and can have a smaller number of states than equivalent conventional trellises. Existing circular Viterbi algorithms (CVAs) on the tail-biting trellis are non-convergent and sub-optimal. In this study, we show that the net path metric of each tail-biting path is lower-bounded during the decoding process of the CVA. This property can be a...

Exponential Error Bounds for Block Concatenated Codes with Tail Biting Trellis Inner Codes

Tail biting trellis codes and block concatenated codes are discussed from random coding arguments. An error exponent and decoding complexity for tail biting random trellis codes are shown. Then we propose a block concatenated code constructed by a tail biting trellis inner code and derive an error exponent and decoding complexity for the proposed code. The results obtained by the proposed code ...
